Johann Gottfried Walthers «Musicalisches Lexicon» von 1732, das erste Musiklexikon in deutscher Sprache, bietet ein noch heute unerschöpfliches Reservoir an Informationen über die musikalischen Verhältnisse, Begriffe, die Aufführungspraxis sowie die wichtigsten Komponisten und Musikschriftsteller bis in das erste Drittel des 18. Jahrhunderts. Es behandelt über 3.000 «gebräuchliche Musik-, Kunst- oder dahingehörige Wörter» aus verschiedenen Sprachen und ist das erste musikalische Nachschlagewerk, in das auch Personenartikel aufgenommen wurden – von hohem Quellenwert auch deshalb, weil Walther seine umfangreichen Literaturstudien durch Anfragen bei lebenden Musikern ergänzte.

Die Bärenreiter-Studienausgabe bringt den originalen Text erstmals in heutiger Schrift und erleichtert damit all jenen den Zugang zu diesem Standardwerk, die sich bislang von der Frakturschrift haben abschrecken lassen. Zugleich wurden die Notenbeispiele aus dem Anhang neu gesetzt und modern geschlüsselt.
