This is one of those stories that doesn’t really have a beginning or an end. You just peek through a small crack for a moment, and then the kaleidoscope continues to turn on its own, without you, leaving you with a slightly bitter aftertaste, like wormwood, and a certain longing and ache in your heart. It came at just the right time, as for several days I had been recalling a book with fairy tales of a similar kind, which I had read as a child — English Fairy Tales.
If we consider the edition as a whole, it’s perhaps too focused on serious researchers who are genuinely interested in comparing different facsimile copies of typewritten drafts. Nonetheless, Tolkien’s commentary and essays on his own work are valuable for understanding the meanings the author intended to convey, and for following how he developed his thoughts.
Definitely not for everyone, and not for children — but for Tolkien enthusiasts.
